Design of Experiments (DoE) is a systematic method for planning experiments to maximise the information gained from a minimum number of runs. This tool guides you through selecting the right design, defining factors and levels, and generating a randomised run matrix — with optional time and capacity estimates to plan your lab schedule.
How to Use the DoE Planner
The wizard walks you through six steps:
1. Choose a Design Type
Select from six design families depending on your goal:
- Full Factorial (2^k): All combinations of two levels per factor. Best suited for screening and when interactions are of interest.
- Full Factorial (3^k): Three levels per factor. Useful when curvature is expected.
- Fractional Factorial (2^(k-p)): A fraction of the full factorial. Reduces the number of runs while still estimating main effects. Available in Resolution III, IV, and V.
- Plackett-Burman: A screening design for many factors (up to 47) with very few runs. Estimates main effects only.
- Central Composite Design (CCD): A response surface design for modelling curvature. Combines factorial, axial (star), and center points.
- Box-Behnken: A response surface design with fewer runs than CCD. No axial points — each factor is varied at three levels.
2. Define Factors
Name your factors (A, B, C, … by default) and set their low and high actual values. These are used to display the design matrix in both coded (±1) and actual units.
3. Set Parameters
Configure replicates, and for fractional factorials the resolution. For CCD, set the number of center points and alpha (axial distance).
Optionally, enable the Time & Capacity panel to enter the duration per experiment, how many runs you can perform simultaneously, and the changeover time between batches. The tool will estimate the total calendar time required.
4. Review Summary
Check the design properties — total runs, factors, resolution, and time estimates. Toggle between calendar days and working days to suit your scheduling needs.
5. View the Matrix
The randomised design matrix is displayed with run order, standard order, and coded factor levels. Toggle to show actual values.
6. Export
Download the design matrix as a CSV file or copy it to your clipboard for use in your statistical software or lab notebook.
